Experience/Education Required: • BS in Mechanical Engineering or similar engineering discipline; advanced degree desirable. • Minimum of 10 years in product design, preferably in consumer packaged goods or similar • Prior managerial or supervisory experience. Ability to accurately forecast human resource needs and staff requirements. Strong coaching and mentoring skills.
Essential Functions:
• Lead key project work to develop consumer insights and translate into new product ideas; develop and execute project plans that demonstrate concept viability against consumer, technical, and business criteria. • Lead internal and/or external design and engineering work to generate product concepts to satisfy unmet consumer needs, and develop stimuli (prototypes, functional models, visual models, etc.) for consumer and/or technical evaluation.
• Partner with Consumer Insights group to develop and support the execution of strategic consumer learning plans to achieve business objectives.
• Voice of Consumer work to uncover unmet needs, to include focus groups, ethnography, need gap analysis, product testing, one on one interview, etc. Vet concepts with consumer/professional groups. • Ready concepts for transfer into feasibility phase of the product development process. Partner with the implementation R&D team to translate product concepts into viable product designs. • Provide direction to staff. Provide strong coaching and mentoring to direct reports. • Work with R&D leadership and business team to minimize exposures and risks associated with assignments.
Technical Skills:
• Must have the ability to translate consumer insights into innovative solutions for new product ideas.
• Must have the ability to lead project teams to create and develop early stage product concepts/prototypes that meet consumer desired performance and functionality.
• Must have the ability to lead the evaluation of product concepts to demonstrate proof-of-principle.
• Must have the ability to design medium complexity assemblies, mechanisms and plastic part configurations for infant care products. Must have the ability to communicate product concepts using ProEngineer or similar. Must be knowledgeable of good engineering drawing layout practices. • Must be knowledgeable of plastic materials and part design requirements and standards. Must be familiar with various manufacturing processes and mold types (e.g. injection molding, blow molding, assembly methods, decoration methods, mono and multi layer film processing knowledge a plus, etc.)
